According to Hollywood sources, a friend of the couple confirmed the split though Gere and Lowell plan to do everything possible to keep things amicable, putting their child together, 13-year-old son Homer Gere, first.
Sources say their split was as a result of their lifestyle differences. Gere, a devout Buddhist, was said to enjoy his solitude, while Lowell, a former model and actress, enjoyed being more social.
They wedded in 2002 after dating for about seven years.
This would be Gere's second marriage split and Lowell's third marriage split.
