Beyonce’s Drunk In Love may be a hit in the U.S., but a U.K. radio station, Bang Radio, has decided to play an edited version of the Jay Z-assisted track, according to Euroweb. Seems not everyone bows down to Queen Bey after all.
Reports from the Huffington Post last night says, Bang Radio announced this week that it will only play an edited version of Drunk In Love, in light of a line from Jay Z verse in the
song.
The radio claims that the rhyme in question hasJay referencing to the Tina Turner biopicWhat’s Love Got to Do With It as he raps, "Now eat the cake, Anna Mae / I said eat the cake, Anna Mae." The film centers on Turner's relationship with her husband Ike Turner, starring Angela Bassett and Lawrence Fishburne. Turner, whose real name is Anna Mae Bullock , is shown in the film being forced to eat cake by Ike.
Bang Radio CEO, Jennifer Ogole released a statement explaining the motivation behind taking out Jay Z's line fromDrunk In Love, "The lyrics controversially imitate a scene of severe domestic violence within the film, displaying promotion of domestic violence against women," she stated. "In this light Bang [refuses] to play the song lyrics from henceforth on our station."
"We believe in the unity of women and music and in no way condone violence, domestic or otherwise, especially not through the power of music," the statement continued.
"Therefore, the decision has been made to wipe the stated lyrics from the song … Respectful of what our audience [wants] to hear on Bang Radio, we feel this is the right action to take in regards to the controversial lyrics of the song and we will continue to serve in social equality for people through music and content on our station."
