Gov. Fashola Approves The Reopening Of LASU

Lagos governor, Babatunde Fashola, has approved the reopening of the Lagos State University (LASU) which had been shut down in the last four weeks following a protest by students over the closing of the school’s registration portal by the authorities as well as hike in school fees.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr Hakeem Bello, and made available to newsmen on Friday in Ikeja, the governor said the reopening was in the interest of students and in compliance with the recommendation of the state House of Assembly Ad-hoc Committee on the recent disturbances in the school.

The student who sent me the pic told me it happened in her school but I wasn't able to confirm this really happened in the school so I'm going to leave the name of the university and hostel out of this report for now until I have more details. SSANU threatens strike, warns FG against full implementation of Needs Report

THE Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities (SSANU),Western Zone, yesterday threatened to down tools if the Federal Government decides to fully implement the Needs Assessment Report which it described as poisonous to Non-Academic Staff in universities.

Addressing newsmen on the issues raised by the Prof. Yakubu led Needs Assessment Committee at a lecture held at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), the National Vice President and chairman Western Zone, of the SSANU, Comrade Alfred Jimoh, said the association had earlier faulted the composition of the Needs committee set up by the Federal Government to identify the gaps in the university system.

He said the committee was not only “lopsided but one sided because it excluded both students and the non-teaching staff in the system and compromise only members of the Academic Staff and the then incumbent President of ASUU. “The report of the committee is laced with some poisonous and odious recommendations against the Non teaching staff, which we call satanic verses of Needs Assessment Report”.

He said therefore that “one cannot but wonder how government could expect an objective and dispassionate report from such a warped and highly skewed committee. True to type and as anticipated by the Non teaching staff of Nigerian universities, the committee came out with a voluminous document full of graphics, illustrations and pictorials which range from truth to half truth and altar false hood.
“We the Non teaching staff Unions particularly the Western zone of the SSANU have at every fora given warning to the Federal Government to discard the offensive parts of the Needs report which seek to determine the job Non teaching staff of Nigerian universities and halt their human development through training and retraining” he said. He further warned that the full implementation of the report would be resisted through industrial action.

For about six months now, public universities, the most vital segment of the country’s tertiary education system had been closed down due to strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over sundry issues including infrastructure which seemed a major one.

The academic personnel of polytechnics and colleges of education were at varying period, at war with government over matters also relating to infrastructural development, welfare, salaries and conditions of service.

Crawford produces 288 graduates at 5th convocation

About 288 graduates cutting across College of Natural and Applied Sciences and College of Business and Social Sciences which involved 15 academic disciplines were produced by Crawford University, Faith City, Igbesa, Ogun State, at the 5th convocation ceremony for the conferment of First Degrees and award of prizes held on Wednesday 18th December, 2013.

Out of the 288 graduates, 17 obtained 1st Class, 62 with 2nd Class Upper, 116 had 2nd Class Lower, 82 got Third Class and 11 had pass.

ALTHOUGH the Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Hope Eghagha has called on students to return back to classes, the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the State led by Dr. Emmanuel Mordi is insisting that lecturers should still hold on until necessary protocols are concluded. 

He has therefore told his colleagues to remain at home until they get the green light from the local ASUU over the suspension of the strike.

Mordi insisted that “after the suspension of the strike by NEC and briefing of DELSU congress on the outcome of NEC meeting lecturers will be free to resume teaching.

“The University administration as the University Senate may direct, will make the revised academic calendar public and all things being equal, this should happen in the next 96 hours”, he stated.
Academic activities were yet to commence at the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka and Anwai-Asaba campuses even as the State.

Commissioner Hope Eghagha made the appeal at the official handover ceremony of e-library complex at the Anwai-Asaba campus, weekend while urging parents to ensure that their children and wards go back to their campuses as government had invested much in the provision of educational facilities in DELSU and other state-owned higher institutions.

Welcoming the Commissioner, the Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Prof. Eric Arubayi  represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Chukwuemeka Aloamaka thanked the State government for building a library of world class in the university noting  that the library edifice has boosted the image of the university and would also enhance the accreditation of many courses in the university.


No political party can use us – ASUU

THE University of Benin yesterday stood still in honour of former President, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Late Prof. Festus Iyayi as it declared  the Late Don irreplaceable.
