Chelsea are looking at buying Saint Etienne defender Kurt Zouma for £10million in the January transfer window, according to The Mirror.
The 19-year-old is sought after by many of Europe’s top clubs, according to the article, and is especially popular with the Blues because he is eligible to play in this season’s Champions League
Jose Mourinho is particularly keen to sign a defender in January as Chelsea’s back line has looked vulnerable at times this season.
The Chelsea boss is beginning to lose patience with the error prone Brazilian David Luiz and
he realises that John Terry will not be playing for very much longer either.
Zouma has starred in more than 50 matches for the French side, despite still being a teenager.
The article claims that he will make the breakthrough to the French national team shortly and may even go with them to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
However, he is currently suspended for 10 matches after a horror tackle.
The challenge left Thomas Guerbert with two breaks in his leg and means that Chelsea won’t see him in action again until after the January transfer window shuts, which leaves Mourinho with a difficult decision to make.
Chelsea’s title rivals ManchesterCity are also keen to sign the player, according to the newspaper, with both clubs believing him to be one of Europe’s outstanding young defenders.
City struggled for centre backs for a long spell this season when Vincent Kompany was injured and are keen to sign someone who can go straight into the side, the paper claims.
