Are Nigerian Designer’s Copycats?f

Its 2014 and fashion statements gets stronger by the day with Nigerian designers attracting rave reviews all over the world; it is thus time to take the fashion business serious.
A renowned Nigerian designer and no nonsense blogger once went off on a particular brand he accused of not being original, ‘copying and pasting’ designs which could otherwise be creatively conceived!
This is clearly seen on Fergie and Toke Makinwa;  a case of clear imitation (or inspiration), maybe Fergie copped the look! then it will be high time to start putting trademark protection on their pieces or indicate where a design is an inspiration (maybe?)

In 2012, Christian Louboutin sued Yves Saint Laurent over sales of red sole shoes which Louboutin is renowned for, thankfully he had trademark protection in place.
Our loved Nigerian Fashion brands are slowing being exposed to the world (we see them taking over) with the likes of Jewel by Lisa, Tiffany Amber, Emmy Collins, Lanre Da silva Ajayi, Deola Sagoe and many more taking over International press, International fashion shows, in luxury Fashion retail stores as La Rinascente in Italy, Selfridges,yoox.com and so many more, we want to make sure we are ready to take on the world when the Fashion tide comes in full force; we can’t do that based on copied pieces, we’ve got to be original, 100% original.
