Townsend vows to keep feet on ground after first Premier League goal for Tottenham
Andros Townsend has acknowledged the importance of staying grounded after a string of impressive displays for Tottenham and England vastly increased his public profile.
The 22-year-old scored a stunning 25-yard strike on his Three Lions debut nine days ago before opening his account for Spurs against Aston Villa on Sunday.
His exploits with England garnered high praise from the press and public alike before
being included in a media storm with Roy Hodgson regarding the now-infamous 'space monkey' joke - but Townsend is only interested in his on-field displays.
"Scoring for my country on my debut was one of the highlights of my career but getting my first goal for my hometown club in the Premier League is up there," Townsend told Sky Sports.
"The main thing for me now is not to get carried away, keep my feet on the ground and keep putting in performances when I get the chance for Spurs.
"I've just been dying to get back out on the pitch. Obviously the positive press was nice but you don't want to get too carried away.
"It's just all about playing football and I was desperate to get back out on the pitch and I've got a goal today and I'm delighted."
Townsend's delivery from the right evaded Roberto Soldado and Lewis Holtby to give Tottenham the lead against Paul Lambert's side, and the winger was pleased to help his team register three points after losing to West Ham last time out.
He continued: "It's been one of the best few weeks of my life and the main thing today was getting back to winning ways after the result against West Ham and I think the second-half performance showed what we're all about, we stuck in and got the three points.
"We didn't have the best of first halves. Villa defended well and got men behind the ball. Obviously I got the goal, it was a cross, I'm not going to take credit for it but I've been unlucky in the past so I'll take that."
