Yenagoa — Suspected pirates have reportedly killed two soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force, JTF, in the Niger Delta, codenamed Operation Pulo Shield, in an ambush along Ikuru community in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, while another soldier was said to be missing.
A boat driver and three staff of the Z-Cube Construction Company were also wounded in the
ambush, which occurred Tuesday.
According to security sources, the soldiers were on escort duty for a three-man team of Z-Cube Construction Company officials.
They were said to be on their way to the site of the project awarded the firm by Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, when they ran into the ambush.
The JTF media coordinator, Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, said: “At about 1p.m. on Tuesday, three of our soldiers fell into an ambush of sea robbers, while on escort duty of three civilian staff of Z-Cube Construction Company, moving from end of New Road to Ikuru town in Adoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
“The company staff were on their way to NDDC road construction site in the area. Our troops fought gallantly and stood by the creed of their profession by paying the supreme sacrifice to ensure the safety of the civilian staff.”
