THE Ondo State House of Assembly, yesterday, described the allegation that it planned to impeach the Deputy Governor of the state, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, as wicked and a ploy by the opposition parties to create confusion in the state.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dare Emiola, who dismissed the allegation as baseless, in Akure, said there was no truth in the allegation. A local publication and some national dailies had reported that the House of Assembly had concluded plans to remove the deputy governor from office on account of ill health.
Governor Olusegun Mimiko had equally described the insinuation as wrong and baseless, saying the rumour emanated from detractors who were bent on causing confusion between him and his deputy.
Mimiko said: “I was surprised to hear that the assembly is planning to begin impeachment process against the deputy governor. There is no such plan in the offing in Ondo State. I am not aware of any such move.
”People float ideas for whatever reason they like, but this is an unsubstantiated statement and the Assembly has no plan to remove the deputy governor for whatever reason best known to the people behind the rumour.” Emiola, in his reaction, said: “The issue of the impeachment of the Ondo State Deputy Governor was never discussed and currently, the House is on recess. Where then would the House members have converged to debate any impeachment?”
He said that the rumour was not only wicked and unpatriotic, but meant by the “enemies of Ondo State, to create confusion in the state.” Emiola said it was a calculated ploy by the opposition parties to cause crisis between the governor and his deputy.
Emiola attested to the cordial relationship that existed between the state governor and his deputy since they assumed office about five years ago. Also, in his reaction, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Olanusi, said those peddling the rumor wanted to use his name to boost their sales.
“The only reason I can deduce for their action is that they want to sell their newspapers at my own expense. I do not think there should be any issue in me being a Deputy Governor at my age. Ajasin and Adefarati were older than I am when they were in power. So, why pick on me? I am sure they just want to use my name to sell their papers. They are only implementing what they have in their minds,” the Deputy Governor said.
